Ballet Scholarships Decided! - 29th March 2010
Noosa Longweekend Festival General Manager, Ian Mackellar and his fellow adjudicators found themselves in a bit of a spin at the festival’s ballet scholarship master class auditions on Saturday 27th March.
The quandary was just how to determine 12 winners from the supremely talented group of 17 finalists who had been selected from a total of 39 dancers after three, gruelling qualifying rounds of auditions. The 17 Sunshine Coast based finalists; all aged between 14 and 17 years, anxiously awaited the judges’ decision.
“The overall standard of applicant was very high and each of the finalists gave of their very best. Ballet Master, John Vye really put them to the test with a 45 minute pointe and barre class, Ian said.
“After considering the intention of the 2010 festival’s ballet scholarship which is to ‘foster, inspire, encourage and nurture developing and aspiring dance students on the Sunshine Coast’, the decision was made to accept all 17 finalists for scholarship positions”.

The show is a tribute to the late, great Frank Sinatra.

Changes to Forum event panellists - 28 05 2010
For Forum events, the Noosa Longweekend invites the best qualified panellists available. There are risks in doing so. The demands on their time are constant, and despite their best intentions they are not always able to fulfil their commitments to us.
Regrettably three panellists who had accepted invitations to join our discussions are now unable to do so.
They are Geremie Barme and Saul Eslake who were contributing to the discussion “China: Should we be worried?”, and Michael Fullilove, who was contributing to “America: In decline?”.
Four speakers with relevant experience and knowledge have accepted invitations to replace them. For the China forum, they are:
- Professor Hugh White, Head of Strategic and Defence Studies at the ANU and a Visiting Fellow at the Lowy Institute. Hugh has 25 years experience in the field of international strategic relationships. He was previously Senior Adviser to the Defence Minister Kim Beasley, and Senior International Relations Adviser to Prime Minister Bob Hawke. He was a Deputy Secretary of the Department of Defence; Head of Strategic Analysis at the Office of National Assessments; and Director of the Australian Strategic Policy Institute
- Rowan Callick, Asia-Pacific Editor for The Australian. Rowan has 30 years experience as a journalist and editor, and was previously The Australian’s Beijing correspondent, and the Australian Financial Review’s Hong Kong correspondent.
- Dennis Lin, an accountant with the international firm BDO. Dennis travels regularly to China and is involved in many Chinese investment deals with Australia, and Australian investments in China.
Replacement for the America forum is:
- Dr Brendon O’Connor, Associate Professor in American Politics at the United States Study Centre at the University of Sydney. Brendon was a Fullbright Fellow at Georgetown University in 2006 and Australian Scholar at the Woodrow Wilson Centre in Washington in 2008. He has edited seven books on anti-Americanism.
While we regret these program changes that were beyond our control, we are confident there will be no compromise to the quality of both Forum discussions.
