Louis Nowra and Mandy Sayer

Between the covers

Multi-award-winning writers, Louis Nowra and Mandy Sayer have led lives crowded with bizarre incidents. Both have written memoirs laden with humour, sadness, jazz, alcoholism, murder, UFO’s and madness – stemming from deeply complicated childhoods. And they are married - to each other.

Louis Nowra is one of Australia’s most versatile and prolific writers, playwrights, screenwriters and librettists. Described as a consummate trickster, his novels include Abaza and The Twelfth of Never. He’s famous also for plays - many that have been filmed, such as Cosi. His latest book ICE is an epic love story full of extraordinary imagery and hypnotic language.

At 26, Mandy Sayer’s first book Mood Indigo dubbed her one of Australia’s Best Young Novelists. Now also a columnist and academic she has published seven books, including the awarded Dreamtime Alice, Velocity and most recently The Night Has a Thousand Eyes.

Nowra and Sayer have collaborated on a literary adventure through Kings Cross, the anthology In the Gutter: Looking at the Stars.

With different tastes and sensibilities, what they share is extraordinary imagination and a wicked sense of humour. In conversation with Janet De Neefe, discover how they solve the successful-writing-couples question.
