Robert Dessaix
A magic carpet ride
A self-described dilettante, Robert Dessaix is a renowned writer, interviewer, translator, broadcaster and cultural commentator.
An insightful observer of characters, places and cultures, he is known for interweaving these elements in beautifully crafted prose.
In his novels Robert Dessaix journeys through physical and mental landscapes, mixing travel writing, biography, personal reflections, memories and meditations.
Among his best known books, published around the world, are the autobiography, A Mother’s Disgrace, the novels Night Letters - translated into six languages, Corfu and the travel memoir Twilight of Love.
A love of Russian language has led to his life-long interest and engagement with that nations culture and writing: he taught Russian language and literature at ANU and UNSW.
On a magic carpet ride from Lisbon to the Sahara, from Paris to the south of France and Algiers, his latest book Arabesques, is Robert Dessaix, and travel memoire at their absolute finest. Be transported over lunch with this gentle man of Australian literature, in conversation with Peter Thompson.
